Do Egyptian citizens need a visa for Russia?

Yes. Egyptian citizens need a standard visa issued through a Russian consulate to enter Russia.

How can Egyptian citizens apply for a visa for Russia?

Step 1. Get an invitation

To apply for a Russian visa, Egyptian citizens must prepare a set of documents. The key document is an official invitation. The required type of invitation depends on the visa category: tourist, business, private, work, or another type, depending on the purpose of the visit.

Step 2. Submit the documents to the Embassy or Consulate of the Russian Federation

Visa applications for Egyptian citizens are submitted to the Embassy or Consulates of the Russian Federation. These diplomatic missions accept visa applications, review documents, and make the final decision on whether to issue or refuse a visa.

Applicants are admitted only by prior appointment, and appointment slots are limited. As a result, queues and longer waiting times are possible, especially during periods of high demand. This submission method is mandatory for all visa categories, including tourist, business, private, work, and student visas.

When applying to the Embassy or Consulate of the Russian Federation, applicants should prepare the complete set of documents in advance and book an appointment early. This helps reduce the risk of documents not being accepted and helps avoid delays in application processing.

⚠️ A visa application may be submitted no earlier than 90 days before the planned date of entry into Russia. We recommend starting the visa process in advance.

How much does a Russian visa cost for Egyptian citizens?

When applicants submit documents directly to the Embassy or Consulate of the Russian Federation in Egypt, they pay only the consular fee. No additional service fees are charged when applying through the consulate.

The consular fee is determined by the rules of the consular institutions of the Russian Federation and depends on the following factors:

  1. Number of visa entries (single-entry, double-entry, or multiple-entry).
  2. Application processing time (standard or urgent).

It is important to note that urgent processing for multiple-entry visas is generally not available. If the application is processed urgently, the consular fee increases.

Consular fees (in Egyptian pounds):

  1. Single-entry visa:
    • Standard processing (4–20 working days) – 4 160 EGP.
    • Urgent processing (1–3 working days) – 8 320 EGP.
  2. Double-entry visa:
    • Standard processing (4–20 working days) – 6 656 EGP.

    • Standard processing (4–20 working days) – 12 480 EGP.
    • Urgent processing (1–3 working days) – 24 960 EGP.

The amounts listed are approximate. The final amount of the consular fee is set by the Embassy or Consulate of the Russian Federation and may change depending on current tariffs and the internal rules of the consular institution.

Tourist visa for Egyptian citizens

Egyptian citizens who wish to enter Russia to visit cultural attractions and architectural monuments need to obtain a tourist visa. Invitations for foreign tourists are issued by travel companies that have their own reference number and registration.

Instructions for applying for a visa for Russia

A tourist invitation may differ in appearance because it is issued on the letterheads of different travel agencies, but it always consists of two parts: tourist acceptance confirmation and a tourist voucher, as well as all the necessary information.

A tourist invitation must include:

  • the reference number and full details of the travel company;
  • the foreign citizen’s full name, citizenship, and all passport details;
  • the planned date of entry into and departure from the Russian Federation;
  • the cities the tourist plans to visit;
  • the tourist’s accommodation details (hotel).

Sample tourist invitation for Egyptian citizens

When applying to a consulate for a tourist visa, you may be asked to provide tickets, documents confirming hotel booking, and an insurance policy. When issuing a tourist invitation, the travel company does not conduct any checks; however, when visa documents are submitted to a consulate, checks are always carried out to determine whether the foreign citizen had administrative violations, criminal convictions, or deportations during previous visits to Russia. If any such violations occurred, an Egyptian citizen will not be issued a visa. Therefore, please note that obtaining a tourist invitation does not guarantee that a visa will be issued.

Important: Tourist invitations and tourist visas are intended for foreign citizens who will stay in hotels or rented accommodation (not with a private individual, such as a relative or friend; staying with a private individual requires a private visa rather than a tourist visa).

For Egyptian citizens, we issue tourist invitations strictly for the travel dates. To apply, applicants must provide documents confirming the purpose of the visit (tourism):

  • A fully paid hotel reservation for the entire period of stay in the Russian Federation in PDF format, indicating the guest’s full name and payment terms in the description, plus a payment receipt. Hostels and beds in shared rooms, as well as private apartment rentals, are not accepted for review, nor is free accommodation with a private individual. Only hotels or officially rented apartments in a tourist location with 100% prepayment are accepted;
  • Paid round-trip flight tickets (itinerary receipt containing all necessary information: e-ticket number or booking code, fare conditions, and conditions of carriage);

The tourist invitation will be issued within 1 (one) working day after all mandatory documents have been provided and the order has been paid. Do not pay for the order if you cannot provide the required documents; without them, we will not be able to process your order.

How long is a tourist visa valid?

A tourist visa for Russia may be issued for up to 90 days with single or double entry, and for up to 180 days with multiple entry. With a multiple-entry tourist visa, the permitted period of stay in Russia must not exceed 90 days within each 180-day period.

For Egyptian citizens, tourist visas are generally issued strictly in accordance with the declared travel dates. In most cases, such a visa is valid for up to 30 days and allows single entry.

Private visa for Russia for Egyptian citizens

If an Egyptian citizen plans to visit the Russian Federation to see relatives or friends, they must obtain a guest (private) visa. In this case, the inviting party may be either an individual or a legal entity. An invitation for a private visa based on the application of the inviting party is issued by the migration authority of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation.

Since Egypt is included in the list of migration-risk countries, the inviting party must first have an interview with an authorized official and only then submit documents to obtain the invitation.

A private invitation for Egyptian citizens issued on the form of the Main Directorate for Migration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation must indicate the foreign citizen’s full name and passport details, the individual invitation number, the visa validity period, and information about the inviting party.

At the stage of processing a private invitation at the Main Directorate for Migration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, checks are carried out to determine whether the foreign citizen had criminal convictions, fines, or deportations during previous visits. If such violations are found, the inviting party will be refused the invitation, with the relevant reason stated.

A private Russian visa for an Egyptian citizen may be single-entry or double-entry. It is valid for up to 90 days.

Apply for a private invitation to Russia for Egyptian citizens

At present, we recommend applying for a private visa, as the document requirements for other visa categories are not suitable for all applicants. A private invitation is issued through the Main Directorate for Migration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation at the place of registration of the host party.

Work visa for Egyptian citizens

A work visa is a set of documents that allows a foreign citizen to enter the Russian Federation and carry out employment or entrepreneurial activity there. This set of documents includes the visa itself, a work permit in the Russian Federation, and migration registration.

The company that plans to hire the foreign employee must obtain a work permit for them and then a work visa invitation.

A work visa is initially issued for 90 days. During this time, the employee must enter the Russian Federation and complete migration registration. After that, the inviting party must arrange an extension of the visa validity period for the duration of the work permit (for 1 year). The advantage of a work visa is that the foreign citizen does not need to leave the Russian Federation to extend it.

Obtaining a work visa for a foreign citizen takes about 1.5 months. Document processing consists of several stages:

  1. the company obtains a permit to hire foreign labor;
  2. the employer company obtains a work permit for the foreign citizen;
  3. the company submits documents to obtain a work invitation for a visa valid for 90 days;
  4. the company registers the arriving employee for migration purposes;
  5. the employer company arranges the extension of the work visa until the work permit expires;
  6. the foreign citizen is registered for migration purposes until the end of the visa validity period.

Unfortunately, we do not issue work invitations. Such an invitation must be issued by the organization inviting the foreign citizen for employment. Remember, such invitations are not sold! For those who want to look for an employer in Russia, we recommend using a tourist visa.

Frequently asked questions

Visa extension in Russia is possible only for work and student visas if there is a valid employment or study agreement. Tourist, business, and private visas generally cannot be extended and require leaving the country to apply for a new visa. Exceptions are possible in emergency circumstances, such as serious illness, the death of a close relative, or natural disasters, provided that supporting documents are submitted and the territorial body of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs is contacted. An application for extension should be submitted no later than 20 working days before the visa expires.
You should:
  1. Clarify the reason for the refusal – request a written explanation from the consulate if it was not provided automatically. Please note that the consulate has the right to refuse a visa without explaining the reasons, and a request for clarification may also be rejected.
  2. Correct any errors – recheck the documents (application form, invitation, and passport validity) and submit the application again after correcting the deficiencies.
  3. File an appeal – appeal the refusal through the consulate or court if it is unfounded, with the help of lawyers or the inviting party.
For complex cases (for example, an entry ban), consultation with an immigration lawyer may be required.
For Egyptian citizens, medical insurance is not mandatory for obtaining a visa; however, we recommend that all foreign tourists take out an insurance policy for the duration of their trip. Such a policy helps cover expenses for emergency medical care, evacuation, loss of documents, and trip cancellation, reducing risks and providing protection in unforeseen circumstances.
For Egyptian citizens who violate the visa regime in Russia, the following consequences are possible:
  1. Administrative fine – from 2 000 to 5 000 rubles for individuals, and up to 500 000 rubles for the host party (for example, an employer or relative).
  2. Entry ban – in cases of serious violations (for example, illegal employment or visa overstay), entry to Russia may be banned for up to several years.
  3. Deportation – in cases of gross violations (forged documents, illegal stay), forced removal may be applied, followed by restrictions on entry.
To avoid problems, it is important to comply with the permitted stay period and migration registration rules.
Egyptian citizens can obtain an urgent visa for Russia by applying to a Russian consulate with the required documents, including an invitation (tourist, business, or private). The processing time for an urgent visa is 1–3 working days, but it requires payment of an additional consular fee. An electronic visa (e-visa) is also available; it is issued online within four days without an invitation, but allows a stay of up to 16 days.
Yes, Egyptian citizens are required to register for migration purposes in Russia if they stay in the country for more than seven working days. Registration is arranged by the host party (hotel, landlord, friends/relatives) at the actual place of stay. More information about the rules and procedure is available in a separate article.
