Applying for a Russian visa as a UK citizen requires specific documents, the most important being an official invitation. The type of invitation depends on the category of visa requested – tourist, business, private, work, or other – which is determined by the primary purpose of your visit.

Invitations for a tourist visa can be issued by a travel agency or a hotel. The travel agency must be officially registered in the Unified Federal Register of Tour Operators, and the hotel must be listed in the Unified List of Classified Hotels.
Step-by-step guide to obtaining a visa to Russia
Obtaining an invitation from an authorized travel company is the fastest way to proceed without unnecessary delays or red tape. A standard tourist invitation consists of two parts: a tourist voucher and a confirmation of admission for a foreign tourist.
A travel company invitation for a UK citizen will include:
- The name and details of the issuing travel company;
- The travel company's official reference number;
- The tourist's full name and passport details;
- The Russian cities the tourist plans to visit;
- Information regarding the tourist's hotel accommodation;
- The exact dates of the trip and the requested number of visa entries;
- The purpose of the visit, explicitly stated as "tourism".
The maximum validity for a tourist visa issued to a UK citizen via a travel company invitation is 180 days with multiple entries. Short-term tourist visas are also available for up to 90 days with single or double entry.
Important! With a multiple-entry tourist visa, UK citizens are permitted to stay in the Russian Federation for a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period.
Self-employed individuals, company directors, remote workers, and unemployed applicants must provide the consulate with a recent bank statement showing cash flow for the last 3 months. The account balance must sufficiently cover the entire trip (calculated at a minimum of £100 per day). If the statement is generated by an online bank, it must bear an official bank stamp.
Students, homemakers, and pensioners are exempt from this financial requirement.
Invitation from a hotel
A tourist invitation for a UK citizen can also be issued by a hotel, provided it is registered in the Unified List of Classified Accommodation Facilities.
However, this method of obtaining a tourist visa comes with several drawbacks:
- Not all hotels are authorized to issue visa invitations. A standard hotel booking confirmation is insufficient and will result in a visa refusal;
- Migration registration in the Russian Federation must be completed by the specific hotel that issued the invitation. Failure to do so can cause serious legal issues, including a ban on entering the country;
- Not all Russian consulates accept hotel invitations for visa processing.
The primary disadvantage of a hotel-issued invitation is that the resulting visa will strictly be single-entry, and its validity will exactly match the dates of your hotel reservation.
Business visa to Russia for UK citizens
UK citizens planning to visit Russia for business development, finding partners, attending exhibitions or auctions, or signing contracts must obtain a business visa. An official business invitation is strictly required for this category.
Important! In addition to the business invitation, UK citizens must provide a formal letter from their employer (or from themselves, if self-employed). This letter must contain comprehensive details about the traveller, the destinations, dates, and the purpose of the visit. It must also list the name of the inviting Russian organization, the contact details of the responsible person in Russia, and clarify who bears financial responsibility for the trip.
This invitation is available in two formats:
Only registered legal entities are authorized to issue invitations for a business visa. For UK citizens, these invitations must be processed either via Telex or as an electronic document.
A Telex business invitation is a fully digital directive. It is an encrypted instruction sent directly from the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to a specific Russian consulate. To apply, the applicant simply provides the unique Telex number to the consulate. Processing a Telex invitation takes between 8 and 13 working days.
A business invitation on an electronic MIA form is a standardized state document. Processing this type of invitation takes from 8 to 21 working days. During this period, background checks are conducted to verify that the applicant has no criminal records, unpaid fines, or prior deportations in Russia. If any violations are found, the invitation request will be denied.
A business visa for UK citizens can be single or double-entry (for visits lasting up to 3 months) or multiple-entry (allowing an unlimited number of entries, valid for up to 1 year).

Private (guest) visa to Russia for UK citizens
To visit relatives or friends, UK citizens must formally request a private visa. The host in Russia must secure a private invitation on behalf of the applicant in accordance with Russian law. The host can be a Russian citizen or a foreign national holding a Russian residence permit. However, in practice, the process can be cumbersome: read why a private visa might not be your best option.
Invitation for a private visa
The official invitation required for a private visa is issued by the local branch of the Main Directorate for Migration Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (GUVM MVD). This document is issued based on an application submitted by either an individual or a legal entity in Russia.
If an individual is hosting the UK citizen, they must apply at their local GUVM MVD office. They will need to provide a completed application form, their own passport, a copy of the applicant's passport, proof of income, a state fee payment receipt, and other supporting documents. If a legal entity is extending the invitation, their representatives must submit the application to the GUVM MVD office where the company is accredited.
If approved, the host will receive the official invitation. This document will outline the host's details, the UK applicant's passport information, the visa's validity period, and the permitted number of entries.
Important! Based on a standard private invitation, a visa can be issued for a maximum of 90 days with either single or double entry.
Application from a close relative
Alternatively, a private visa can be issued without an MIA invitation. In this case, the decision is made directly by the Consul, based on a formal written application from a Russian citizen who is a close relative of the UK applicant.
This application can only be submitted by Russian citizens who are spouses, parents (or adoptive parents), children (or adopted children), spouses of children, full or half-siblings, grandparents, or grandchildren of the UK citizen.
The Russian relative can submit this application either from within the Russian Federation or directly in the UK. If applying from Russia, the application must be certified by a Russian notary and the original document must be posted to the UK. If the Russian relative resides in the UK, they must submit the application in person at the consulate.
Please note that you must also provide official documents confirming the close family relationship, either as originals or notarised copies.
Important! A private visa issued via a relative's application can be valid for up to 1 year with multiple entries, allowing the applicant to remain in the Russian Federation continuously for the entire validity period without needing to leave.
To process a multiple-entry visa, the applicant must also provide a medical certificate proving the absence of HIV infection (issued no more than 3 months prior). This requirement is waived for foreign citizens who have an immediate family member (spouse, child, or parent) who is a citizen of the Russian Federation.
Private visa in special cases
In exceptional circumstances, a private visa may be granted following a direct request from a UK citizen. Special cases include emergency medical treatment in Russia, caring for a seriously ill close relative, or the death of a close relative. All such cases must be strictly corroborated by medical documentation or a death certificate.

Work visa to Russia for UK citizens
UK citizens wishing to enter the Russian Federation for official employment with a legal entity (such as a Russian company or a foreign branch operating in Russia) under an employment contract must secure a work visa.
The responsibility for processing a work invitation lies entirely with the employer, who must also secure a work permit for the foreign employee.
The process for obtaining a work visa involves several key stages:
- Securing a work permit for the foreign applicant (managed by the employer);
- Obtaining a preliminary short-term work visa (valid for 90 days) and completing migration registration upon arrival in Russia;
- Extending the work visa to match the full duration of the work permit, along with extending the migration registration. A unique advantage of the Russian work visa is that the holder can reside continuously in Russia for its entire validity without the need to exit the country. Family members of the employed foreign worker can also apply for dependent work visas, which will list "accompanying family member" as the purpose of the trip.
Important! For Highly Qualified Specialists (HQS), the visa can be issued immediately for up to 3 years. Provided the employee remains with the same employer, this visa can be renewed indefinitely for subsequent 3-year periods.
