Railway Stations and Airports in Ulaanbaatar

  1. Ulaanbaatar railway station

Ulan Bator Railway Station is located in the eastern part of the capital, a 15-minute drive from Genghis Khan Square.

The station was solemnly opened in June 1949, after the intergovernmental agreement was signed between the Mongolian People's Republic and the USSR on the creation of the joint stock company Ulan Bator railway. A month later, a rail link was opened between Naushki station and Ulan Bator, from 1955 trains began to run from the capital of Mongolia to the border station Zamyn-Uud. In 1956, a direct railway connection was opened between the USSR and the PRC, and the Trans-Mongolian railway began to operate. Through the Ulan-Bator station, trains began to follow in the directions of Moscow-Beijing, Ulan-Bator-Irkutsk, Ulan-Bator-Huhkhot, and Ulan-Bator-Beijing, the geography of internal railway routes significantly expanded.

Ulan Bator railway station has three platforms; two of them are the main ones. The station building has several waiting rooms, a recreation room, cafes, shops and kiosks, a first-aid post, a pharmacy and currency exchange offices. On the second floor there is a duty free shop, which opens just before the departure of international trains.

  1. Genghis Khan International Airport in Ulaanbaatar

Genghis Khan International Airport is the main airport of the two existing in Mongolia. The second air gate is located in the town of Ulgii. The location of the international airport is the capital district of Ulaanbaatar, Khan-Uul, which occupies the opposite bank of the Tuul River, passing through the city center.

In 1961, the airport was given the name "Buyant-Ukha"; it was named after Genghis Khan in 2005 to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the founding of the Mongol Empire.

Flights are operated by Mongolian, Chinese, Russian, Japanese, Turkish, and Korean airlines. Among international direct flights there are flights to Tokyo, Moscow, Berlin, Irkutsk, Osaka, Seoul, Beijing, Hailar, Ulan-Ude, Cheongju, and Istanbul.

On three floors of the airport there is a waiting room (first floor), shops and cafes, a VIP-zone, a pharmacy, a hairdresser, exchange offices and a post office. The airport has offices of national airlines Aero Mongolia, Izinis Airways and Mongolian Airlines.
